This print is of the iconic Hengistbury Head, Dorset.
Hengistbury Head is the headland between Bournemouth (Southbourne) and Mudeford and projects into the English Channel. It has importance as an archaeological site, local nature reserve and conservation, science and environmental interest. The ‘hill’ section is also known as Warren Hill. The whole area is popular, especially with dog walkers, visitors, and for watersports.
This vista must have been photographed thousands of times. Yet its mood is constantly changing and I’m never quite sure what will greet me. Sometimes it is thunderous shore break, others so inviting you would regret missing out on a sunrise dip! Some days the Isle of Wight is unbelievable clear, other days you wonder where it is. Dogs and their humans love this beach, chasing the spray and their tennis balls. Soft earthy hues from the head, with its layered cross-section (leaving you musing about the bronze age and what those people might have been doing then) to the delightful deep blues, emeralds, teals and whites of the ocean. Salty wind in your hair, only the noise of sea and pebbles underfoot, eagerly searching for shell treasures others might have missed, deep breaths. It is one of these places that keeps on giving you more: you could be there for hours and not be bored.
